Posing for Family Photo Sessions

Photo sessions can sometimes be hectic enough but now let’s add a furry friend in the mix! Don’t stress. I’ve got some solid tips on how to create the best environment to get those “paw”some photos your clients will love!

Sibling Rivalries Hug

If you have siblings in the bunch, make them hug it out while they talk about their old or current rivalries! Who listens to the coolest music or who is better at soccer? IDK but you’re hugging and laughing and I’m getting great shots.

Smooches

The power of the smooch! Whether it’s just a quick peck on the cheek to get those giggles flowing or it’s a loving moment between babies and parents, this is a great one!

Pro Tip: Tell your clients not to purse their lips when they kiss! It’ll feel weird but it looks better IMHO.

Make it an Activity

When I first started doing family sessions I kept running into the same thing; a tired family who spent hours getting dressed up just to stand still (or attempt to stand still) for the same boring portait style photos. Don’t get me wrong, I love a classic pose for good measure, but I’ve found that turning family photo sessions into a group outing conducive to photography makes it WAY more fun for the family, and produces better photos overall.

Here are a few of my favorite family session activities

  1. A Bonfire: perfect for the fall when you can bundle up and make smore’s

  2. The Park: let’s go on some swings and slide down a slide and connect with our inner childhood moments again

  3. A hike: hit the trails with some snacks and drinks and let’s go exploring for the best views with some awesome natural light

  4. Planting Flowers: double bonus sessions because you can work your yard work into this one by planting flowers and herbs in pots and around your home

Take a Walk

If you’re feeling stuck about what to do next, just start walking! Get that blood pumping and move around. This will give you time to plan for more ideas and give the family a break from standing still or having to look at the camera.
