Pet Friendly Photo Sessions
Photo sessions can sometimes be hectic enough but now let’s add a furry friend in the mix! Don’t stress. I’ve got some solid tips on how to create the best environment to get those “paw”some photos your clients will love!
Be Patient
Adding a pet into your session means you’re going to have to take a breath and slow yourself down. Make slow movements and slowly introduce yourself to the dog making sure you pay attention to how they are responding to you. If the pup is super friendly than play off of their energy! If they are more reserved, honor that space and allow for some more statued and far away shots.
Treats and Toys!
Make sure to get treats pre-approved or have your clients come prepared with a few different treat and toy options to keep their pet entertained and happy the whole time! Additionally, giving treats can make getting comfortable around each other a breeze.
Rubber Band and a Toy
This is a hack I’ve tried for some of the most rambunctious of pups. Disclaimer: It takes a while, make sure you’ve got your shutter speed set like you’re filming a horse race, and don’t let the dog actually get the toy…protect your camera!
Here’s what you do. Take a plushy or small toy and rubber band it around your camera so it sits on your flash stand. This gives the dog something to look at and gives you some extra time to get those good shots.
They Don’t Have to Be Looking
Sometimes the best way to capture a moment is to not force it! Let your clients interact with their furry loved one and snap a few moments in between. Not every photo needs to be staged, some of the favorite photos I’ve taken over the years end up being unplanned or even a little out of focus! Just go with the flow and let their bond do the work for you.
When all else fails… Photoshop!
